SAFS have been contacted by Newcastle University to help facilitate a new study being conducted by an organisation ASC-UK into the effects of Autism in Adulthood.

We identified 13 families that fit the criteria and who could potentially contribute and benefit from the study. The research is looking into how autism affects the lives of adults living with the condition. There so far has been little research into the long-term impacts of autism and how it changes throughout adulthood. Therefore the study aims to uncover the life experiences of adults with autism and how this impacts their physical and mental health and lifecourse information such as; employment, social support and lifestyles choices.

The study also includes the Parents and Carers of the adults, to take into account their experiences of living and caring for an adult with autism.

We hope this study will not only improve our understanding of autism but also the treatment and service offered to people from the autism community.

At SAFS we are always pushing for our service users to have the best care possible. Therefore we hope that by participating in this study, future generations of adults with autism and their Parents and Carers will benefit and learn new ways of copying and managing the condition to enable all to reach their full potential.
